About the Project

Turning Eggshell Waste into a Renewable Energy Tool

This project explores the sustainable production of biodiesel by utilizing waste eggshells as a heterogeneous catalyst. Eggshells, primarily composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), are processed through calcination to produce calcium oxide (CaO) — an effective, low-cost catalyst used in the transesterification of vegetable oils or waste cooking oils.

The Challenge & The Approach

From Food Waste to Clean Fuel Production

The Problem

Eggshells are generated in large quantities as food industry waste, while conventional biodiesel catalysts are often costly or environmentally taxing to produce, limiting the accessibility and sustainability of biodiesel production.

The Catalytic Approach

Waste eggshells are converted through calcination into calcium oxide (CaO), an effective heterogeneous catalyst used in the transesterification reaction that converts vegetable or waste cooking oils into biodiesel.

How It Works

From Eggshell to Biodiesel

Eggshell Collection

Waste eggshells, composed mainly of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), are collected as the raw material.

Calcination

The eggshells are processed through calcination to convert CaCO₃ into calcium oxide (CaO).

Transesterification

The CaO catalyst drives the transesterification of vegetable or waste cooking oils into biodiesel.

Innovation

What Makes This Approach Distinct

Waste-Derived Catalyst

Uses a food-industry by-product instead of costly synthetic catalysts.

Low-Cost Process

Calcination offers an effective and economical route to a functional catalyst.

Circular Resource Use

Combines waste-oil and waste-eggshell streams into one sustainable production cycle.
